The advance booking for ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ has been open for a week now and the early trend for the weekend has been showing good numbers. PS 1 also will perhaps have the best first-day advance bookings number for any Tamil film this year, and will also surpass Kamal Haasan’s ‘Vikram’ which released earlier this year.
As per a Hindustan Times report, the Tamil version of the film has sold tickets worth Rs. 10 crores globally for its’ opening day alone. For the Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam-dubbed versions, the advance bookings have been close to Rs. 1 crores, taking the total tally to Rs. 11 crores. Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan’s ‘Vikram’ advance booking sales were of Rs. 15.30 crores for the first day when it released in June. As the entire Thursday is left for the advance bookings of the film, ‘PS 1’ might surpass the figure.
Even though PS 1 has generated quite a pan-India stir due to it’s promotions, the film’s major bookings show a strong trend from Tamil Nadu alone. As per the same report, only 4% of the advance bookings are from outside Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The Hindi-dubbed version of the film has only collected Rs. 18 -20 lakh so far. Shows in cities like Pondicherry and Trichy are sold out not just for the opening day but for the whole weekend. Many theatres in Chennai have reported housefull shows as well.
As per the HT report, advance figures at the US box-office have shown some promise. At the US box office, the film has already collected $ 835,000 ( Rs. 6.8 CR) and is all set for a million-dollar collection as far as advance figures in the North American market are concerned. The total advance bookings for PS 1 is touching close to Rs. 20 crores and may even reach Rs. 25 crores at the end of the day.
‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ has been adapted from Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel of the same name. The book is an epic chronicling the Chola dynasty.
